When Avocados Attack

Avocados are everywhere! On toast! In guacamole! In smoothies! On burgers! In quinoa salads! In tacos! Here are some facts about avocados:

  • Americans on average eat 7 pounds of avocado annually as compared to one pound in 1989.
  • Per-capita avocado consumption has tripled in the past 15 years.
  • There are over 400 different varieties of avocado, but 95% of the avocados consumed in the U.S. are Hass avocados, which were invented on accident by a postal worker named Hass in 1926.
  • Avocados are a fruit, not a vegetable (technically vegetables don’t have internal seeds – thus tomatoes, cucumbers, bell pepper, squash – are all fruits). Specifically, avocados are classified as a berry.
  • With four grams of protein, they are the fruit with the highest protein content
  • They are very high in fiber – 10 grams in a medium avocado
  • Avocados have more fat than any other fruit or vegetable, but it is monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which has been show to lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and raise good (HDL cholesterol).  The fat and fiber in avocados are help you feel full
  • Avocados have more potassium than a banana and are loaded with tons of other nutrients – eaten in moderation avocados are very good for you
  • Avocados do not ripen until after they are picked
  • Hipsters love avocados
