Turning 16 – Things 16 Year Olds Can Legally Do

Our firm, The St. Louis Trust Company was started 16 years ago this week. It seems both like yesterday as well as a long time ago. I guess that’s how these things go. There were about ten of us at its inception  – mostly from Arthur Andersen – and 14 (brave) original client families who joined us. We now have over 50 employees and over 50 client families. I am very proud of our firm, our culture and how we serve our clients. In honor of turning 16, here are some things that you can legally do upon turning 16:

  • Obtain a driver’s license to operate a car.
  • Get Married! For most states the age of consent for marriage is sixteen with parental approval.
  • Legally engage in sexual intercourse in most states.

  • Obtain a license to pilot a balloon or glider.
  • Have a job with full-time hours (jobs for those under age 16 have limits on hours that can be worked each day and week and are limited to after school or weekends)
  • Drop out of school. Some states allow a 16 year old to drop out of high school with parental consent.
  • While the purchase of alcohol in all states is not legal until age 21, some states allow persons 16 years old and older to consume alcohol at home with parental consent and supervision.
  • Register as an organ donor in most states (this is a growing recent trend).
  • Obtain a passport without parental consent.
  • Donate blood, with parental consent

  1. I have been 16 for a while now and I feel like my parents are keeping these rights away from me .I had no Idea I had these rights until I got mad and searched it up , They are a worse version of hollicopter parents . Also I have several questions can I make my own choices about my hair and have a phone without my parents consent and am I allowed to hang with friends and go places by myself without my parents consent.

    • In order to have your own phone that you pay for you would have to be either emancipated, which means you are legally considered an adult before 18 with the exception of you being able to provide for yourself and you don’t live with your parents or you can wait until 18 which is when you can legally enter into a phone contract and buy your own phone which only you would have access to and it would legally count as stealing for your parents to take, look,or hide your phone without your permission. When your 18 you legally don’t need consent from your parents to do anything and you have the right to leave the house whenever you want without consequences and you can pretty much go see and go do whatever you want but relising that your responsible for all your actions. At 16 you can get a full time job and a drivers license but unless your emancipated your parents can still take your phone, ground you, give you a curfew, and can check your phone. I hope this helped kc !

      • What do you mean by ‘No Consequences’? Pretty much anything you do has consequences, including living in your parents’ home and needing to abide by their rules, the same as if you are a paying boarder or renter. Don’t abide by the rules set down, out you go. Just saying’.

  12. can a 16 year old use his passport with a residents visa and fly where ever he wants without parental permission?

    • I am almost positive the answer is no. When my kids were under 18 there was some special things we had to do in terms of parental consent for them to fly by themselves. I think most likely you’ll have to wait till you’re 18 to fly where you want without parental consent.
